History of Kanch Mandir

The temple was built in the early 20th century (completed in 1903) by Seth Hukumchand Shresthi, a legendary industrialist and cotton merchant of Indore who was a prominent leader of the Jain community.

  • The Artisans: Seth Hukumchand hired master craftsmen from Jaipur and Iran to design the glass work.
  • The Material: Multicolored glass sheets and mirrors were imported from Europe and cut on site by hand.

Location and Visitor Guidelines

  • Location: Itwaria Bazar, Near Rajwada, Indore.
  • Timings: 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM daily.

💡 The TPH Advantage

Kanch Mandir is located in a congested old city lane with no car parking. We arrange local transport connections or drop you at the nearest gate, with a local guide who guides you through the narrow market streets safely.

The Mirrored Interiors and Artworks

Every surface of the temple interior (walls, ceilings, pillars, and door frames) is covered in thousands of tiny mirrors and cut-glass panels:

  • The Glass Paintings: Glass panels depict stories from the Jain scriptures, the 24 Tirthankaras, and moral tales about karma.
  • The Refraction: The placement of mirrors is designed so that when a single candle or lamp is lit inside, its reflection multiplies into thousands of tiny lights across the hall.

The Idols and Main Shrines

  • The Main Deity: The primary shrine houses a black stone idol of Lord Chandraprabha.
  • The Tirthankaras: Side shrines contain highly polished glass-cut statues of Lord Adinath and Lord Mahavira.

The Annual Sugandh Dashami Festival

During the holy festival of Sugandh Dashami, the temple is decorated with intricate sand art designs (*Rangolis*) made of colored herbal powders and incense. Devotees from across Central India gather to offer prayers and admire the temple’s illuminated reflections.

Important Rules for Visitors

  • Leather Items: No leather items (wallets, belts, bags) are allowed inside the temple.
  • Photography: Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main shrine hall to preserve the sanctity of the temple.
  • Dress Code: Wear respectful, modest clothes. Remove shoes before entering.
